People Getting Too Close to Gray Whale in Marina Del Rey

Despite rules and pleas for cooperation from local whale experts , many whale watchers in Marina Del Rey have been getting to close to the wayward whale in the channel at the Marina as these photos from Sunday, June 14 illustrate. Federal laws state that it is against the law to approach within 100 yards in the water, however many boaters, kayakers, and paddleboarders have been observed waiting to catch a closer look at the whale. These rules are in place both to protect the whale and the humans from a disastrous encounter with the whale.Anyone interested in seeing the whale can get a great view from the jetty.

Hey Jonathan! How are you? I love your shots of the Whale! Amelia and I looked for him all morning the other day and never could get a good picture of him! Hope all is well!

Thank you for saying something!

Come on people this whale is not entertainment!!

WHAT IF WE ARE COMPROMISING HIS OR HER FUTURE AND SURVIVAL BY INTERACTING WITH IT SO CLOSELY?

The sound of gas powered motors is amplified underwater and terribly disturbing to the lost baby whale.
Whale watching boats turn their motors OFF hundreds of yards away from a whale to not interfere with its navigation. Paddling around it is better in terms of noise pollution but touching it, come on! Idiots!

Think about it, he or she is young on its swim up from the mexican birthing lagoon, without it's mother, probably scared and lonely.
The media makes it sound as if he's "just resting". Yesterday I spoke to a police officer who works with the Coast Guard in MDR observing this whale since it arrived, he said it doesn't look good for the young whale. In fact he said "it's done", meaning not going to survive. The whale has become lethargic and the orange fungus on his back has spread a great amount since arriving in Marina Del Rey. Have some respect for this rare creature, please!
