Vitali Klitschko Retains Heavywwight Title

Shot my first professional boxing match, the heavyweight championship bout with champion Vitali Klitschko taking care of business against challenger Cris Arreola. Would have preferred to be ringside, but it was still cool from my position in the stands. The funny moment of the night was a cascading chorus of boos for Gov Arnold Schwarzenegger when he walked to his seat ringside.

Wildfire in Ventura County / Moorpark Area

A brush fire broke out today in Ventura County amid red flag warning conditions. Fire officials named it the Guiberson Fire , and it burned from near the Fillmore area down to the northern section of Moorpark where I made these photos this afternoon including some ranch hands at an avocado ranch trying to put out the fire with tree branches, something I'd never seen before. They did a good job! The winds laid down as the afternoon progressed helping out the firefighters. The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the fire started by spontaneous combustion of manure, wow.

Santa Monica Pier 100th Anniversary Celebration

Here's a few photos from the fireworks show celebrating the centennial of the Santa Monica Pier. Due to a lack of wind, after the first few minutes the smoke from the fireworks hung right over the pier area making it a real challenge to photograph.

Fashion Designer Juan Carlos Obando

Last week I visited the studio of Los Angeles based fashion designer Juan Carlos Obando as he and his team were in final preparations on their intricate Spring 2010 collection for Fashion Week in NYC. The photos helped illustrate this Washington Post story . Juan Carlos and his crew were super chill, and the vibe in the studio is peaceful, clean, and very creative. Relaxing tunes playing and nice available light in older building near Koreatown. They have a technique using an airbrush on the textiles that looks amazing in person, the photos don't do it justice.

Michael Jackson Finally Laid To Rest

On a hot and humid evening, Michael Jackson was finally laid to rest at Forest Lawn Glendale over two months after his death. The Jackson family arrived about 90 minutes late reportedly because Katherine Jackson realized it had turned into an event, "not anything remotely private — hit her all at once." It was an eerie scene as a nearly full moon colored orange from the nearby wildfire rose over the hilltop where the service was taking place.

Station Fire Slows Down

These images are from yesterday up in the fire zone in the Chilao Flats and Big Tujunga areas. Firefighters caught a break in the weather and the rate of spread slowed down considerably. A dirty brownish red rain began falling just after the firefighters evacuated the area, slowing down the advancing flames in there Firefighters were still mopping up an area of Big Tujunga Canyon where some home burned down. Unfortunately, we saw carnage at what appeared to be a kitten mill a few houses down from where this home was destroyed. Photojournalist Ted Soqui has more details on his blog.
